FAQ’S
What is Remapping?
Remapping is basically rewriting/changing data stored inside the vehicle’s ECU (electronic control unit). The ‘map’ stored inside the ecu is series of figures which the control unit uses to calculate how the engine operates. By altering these figures in the ‘map’ we can improve the efficiency of the engine, increasing performance and improving fuel economy.
How long does it take?
On average a remap takes 1 – 2 hours, this includes a before and after diagnostic check and a road test by yourself to make sure you are happy.
What is Chipping?
Chipping refers to replacing the ‘chip’ inside the ecu. The chip stores all the ‘map’ data, however since approximately 1999 most vehicles do not require the chip to be replaced.
How much more power will I get from a remap?
On average expected power gains are:
Non turbo 5-20 BHP
Turbo 25-60 BHP
Turbo Diesel 15-45 BHP
These figures are purely indicative. A remap will also improve driveability, throttle response and fuel economy. These figures can’t be measured but ultimately make your vehicle much better to drive. For exact improvements please contact us with your vehicle details.
Are tuning files custom or generic?
All tuning files are custom. A copy of the standard map is read from your ecu, that map is then altered to suit your requirements.
Can my vehicle be returned to standard?
Quite simply ‘yes’. All original files are saved on a secured database so if you require we can return your car back to its standard tuning level.
How do you remap my car?
Using the latest technology we connect to your vehicle via the ODB/diagnostic port, we are then able to read the map in your vehicle’s ecu. The map is then sent to Viezu where the parameters are carefully adjusted to suit your specification. The new modified map is the uploaded to the vehicle via the OBD/Diagnostic port.
Will re-mapping invalidate my car’s warranty?
The way As-Tuning files re-programme a vehicle is completely undetectable. All codes and diagnostics that a dealer may read will remain exactly the same. We say it with confidence because of the rigorous testing regime all files go through, and we even give a 24 month software warranty to you.
But be warned – not all tuning companies can say this.
Should I tell my insurance company?
Whilst the upgrade is undetectable, the responsible answer to this question has to be “yes”, your insurance company should be notified. However, many insurance companies do not penalise you for upgrades of this nature, particularly if you’re tuning for increased economy.
Will the life span of my engine be reduced?
No, not at all. Sadly some engines can be over tuned, “stressing” the engine, transmission, cooling systems, etc, and reducing the life span and reliability of the car. This is why its important to choose a reputable tuner.
We take great care to ensure that all of our modifications have no detrimental effect on your car. In a lot of cases the economy tune actually helps to extend the life of components such as the clutch and gearbox by making the delivery of the power far less aggressive and smoothing the overall drive of the vehicle.
